Brussels Ommegang

Ommegang

Wednesday 03 July 2024 – friday 05 July 2024
Grand market of Brussels

As the name suggests, the Ommegang was originally a solemn procession in which the participants walked around the city or church in the context of a personality or saint cult.

When Emperor Charles decided to introduce his son Philip to the people of Brussels in 1549, the townspeople organized such an Ommegang as a tribute. On the occasion of Belgium’s centenary in 1930, the Ommegang rose from its ashes and to this day the procession is part of the city’s historical heritage.

Today the emphasis is on creating a beautiful spectacle with extra attention to contemporary light and fire effects, music and folklore.
